After a busy day at school, having some time to slow down, get creative and enjoy something they love can be really valuable for children.
At Doodlebugs Arts & Crafts in London Colney, our after-school sessions give children the opportunity to explore art and crafts in a relaxed, friendly and creative environment.
But art isn't just about making something to take home. There are lots of ways creative activities can support children's development too.
🎨 Encouraging creativity
Art gives children the freedom to experiment with colours, materials, shapes and ideas. There isn't always a right or wrong answer, which allows children to make their own choices and develop their imagination.
✂️ Developing fine motor skills
Activities such as drawing, painting, cutting, colouring, sticking and modelling all encourage children to use and develop the small muscles in their hands and fingers.
These skills are useful for many everyday activities and can also support the development of handwriting and hand-eye coordination.
💛 Building confidence
There is something lovely about a child looking at something they've created and saying, "I made that!"
Trying something new, completing a project and seeing their own ideas come to life can help children develop a sense of achievement and confidence.
🧠 Learning through experimentation
Creative activities give children opportunities to try things out, solve little problems and discover what happens when they use different materials and techniques.
Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned — and that's okay! That's all part of being creative and learning.
🌈 A chance to switch off
After a busy school day, creative activities can give children the opportunity to step away from screens and spend some time doing something hands-on.
